By now we have made much of the fact that Seymour Kushner loves music—a fact that’s evident both from his long, eclectic list of tastes, and from his impressive history of concert-going. As to the former, we note, once again, that Seymour Kushner loves modern dance, that he loves jazz, that he is excited by different styles of music from different parts of the world, and that he even has a soft spot for rock. As to the latter, we reiterate that he has ventured to some of the world’s hottest jazz clubs, that he has seen some of the very best dance crews, and that he was in attendance at the historic Concert for New York City in October 2001.
What we might emphasize about Seymour Kushner, however, is that he is no mere fanboy. He does not latch on to these musical styles in the same way that you or I might latch on to, say, a favorite movie or TV show. No, his enthusiasm is cultivated by his wide basis of musical knowledge. To wit: Seymour Kushner holds a degree in Music, and, for a brief time in his life, even toyed with the idea of going into orchestra management as a profession!
His wide musical knowledge, and his academic background, lead Seymour Kushner to hold passionate views about all things musical—including the way music is recorded. For instance, he is a strong proponent of listening to music on CD, by way of a good stereo system. His argument is that, in compressing musical files into MP3 format, much of the quality and clarity of the recording is lost. He also views earbud listening as a compromise. In short, Seymour Kushner believes that true musical enthusiasm leads one to respect the music enough to demand the very best-sounding recordings available, and not to settle for lesser audio.
So he is something of an audiophile, but make no mistake: His particularity is only the result of his passionate love for music. Seymour Kushner devotes himself to all of his many hobbies with just this level of vigor—though music is, without question, high on his list of priorities!
